Voice-Over 101 – How to Practice and Record Yourself

There is so much power behind a great voice-over it can make any audio-video content an instant hit. Who enjoys reading onscreen text after all? In addition, adding voice-over to any production allows the team to work more efficiently, not to mention more affordably too.

As an aspiring voice-over artist, you have so much to learn about perfecting the craft, one of which is the importance of recording yourself. This is indeed a crucial part of your potential success as a professional voice-over artist. When you can listen to your own voice, you can critique yourself, and slowly but surely, you will improve.

As you go along, you will likely consider having a recording studio of your own, right in your own home. If you dont think you can do it by yourself, you can always get someones help. As a beginner though, you can rely on your ever handy laptop or desktop, together with certain software that allows you to record your voice and then listen to it after.

After recording your practice sessions, you can proceed to editing and improving the quality of the final sound. You need not be an expert to do this. Your main task is to improve your voice-over skills. You can take care of the technical aspect later.

Of course, to be able to record your voice, you need a microphone. Newbies usually start out with a condenser microphone, a common fixture in recording studios everywhere, which is preferred for two reasons: it has remarkable transient response (the mics ability to reproduce the speed of your voice) and its frequency range is particularly large.
They do tend to be more sensitive to loud sounds, but their output is incredibly louder than other microphone types.

If you think youre ready, find yourself a good spot in the house – maybe a noiseless and comfortable room or corner – then record yourself and find the right sound levels. Keep the recording meter away from red area as this will surely cause noise or distortion. To keep your speakers sound from getting picked up by your mic, use headphones plugged directly into your computer.

When all is good, start recording and remember to keep your original mic position.

Then, when youre done, be sure to save your work and listen to your recordings. There are various software you can use for this.

As businesses need more and more audio-visual content, its becoming increasingly obvious that the demand for voice-over talents is soaring. Recently, voice-over was number 4 among the 20 fastest growing skills according to online job websites.
